Topic Description: Free Speech and the First Amendment. Individuals and the right to protest. Where do we draw the line regarding free speech? Key Vocabulary: 1st Amendment, freedom of speech, petition, establishment, viewpoint, abridge, grievance, redress, prohibit, congress, government, patriotism, nationalism. Goals: After completing this lesson, students will be able to do the following: Understand how to work collaboratively on a live document. Define key vocabulary in their own words by obtaining relevant information from the readings and videos. Analyze multiple points of view through their readings. Share information learned in their groups. Create a video as a group explaining their definitions and current debate regarding NFL protests and other historical protests in the United States.
Complex Concepts Students Will Understand Through Using a Shared Document: How this will ask learners to collaborate using a Shared Doc. Students will work together in groups of 3 to learn more about the 1st Amendment and understand different points of view regarding the 1st Amendment. Current events about the right to freedom of speech. Some NFL players have begun to protest equal rights for African Americans and our seeking social justice. Students will also review historical protests and make connections or analyze events from the past and present. Some tasks are partner tasks, and some are individual. How this will ask learners to collaborate using a shared doc: The "Learning About the 1st Amendment" Google Doc will be viewable by all students in a group. Students will be grouped by three and each member will be responsible in defining one vocabulary term and sharing with their group. Students will share their vocabulary definitions with their perspective groups. Students will read together current news articles and take individual notes. Students will be required to create a group video explaining their defintions and analyze the points of view that they have learned through their assigned readings and what they learned on their own.
